In 2013, I started The Atlantic’s “By Heart” series with the artist Doug McLean.

Each piece begins with the same question: What passage from literature has forever changed the way you think, work, or live?

The resulting as-told-to essays have been anything but formulaic—a love song to the written word that’s almost as evocative, dynamic, and varied as literature itself.

In 2017, “By Heart” became the basis of Light the Dark: Writers on Creativity, Inspiration, and the Artistic Process (Penguin Books), collected favorites from the series alongside previously unpublished essays.
